Women + Wholeness is an ongoing video series featuring women that celebrates the forceful, fractured, fanciful, fragile, and fantastic female essence. From the lens of photographer and documentary filmmaker, Genevieve Russell, each woman in the series has a strong identity and a deep connection to her life’s work—an embodied place that comes straight from the heart. Mostly entrepreneurs, these women have artfully turned a passion into a profession. Topics include health, music and song, story, identity, land, gardening, movement, wilderness, art, sexuality and pleasure.

Genevieve carefully, colorfully, and masterfully weaves each woman’s story to create an evocative 10-minute video. Meant to awaken, inspire, and connect to something bigger, Genevieve hopes viewers will see themselves in these personal, heartfelt stories that restore the forgotten feminine and celebrates our individual and collective wholeness.

The Bali Art Project was created in 2000 to permit young Americans, with limited financial means, to learn about the world outside the boundaries of their own country.

Zenia Victor and Gaylon Duke, of Santa Fe, New Mexico take 8 high school juniors, 4 girls and 4 boys, to Ubud, Bali for 4 weeks to study local art forms with master Balinese teachers: painting, dance, gamelan, puppet-making, and how these arts relate to Balinese cultural and spiritual life. They also study language, religion, history, social etiquette, attend temple ceremonies, performances, and take day trips to other areas of the island.

I met Gaylon and Zenia on assignment for Santa Fe Living Treasures in the Fall of 2009. The couple was honored as Living Treasures for their work with young people and the Bali Art Project. After hearing the kids life-changing testimonials at the Living Treasures event, I was inspired to join Gaylon and Zenia and produce a short documentary film about the initiative, in hopes of using it as a teaching tool and model for other communities, as well as ensure continual support and understanding of the program in Santa Fe.

The project is a \"personal project\" as they say. Self-funded, with help from my community, and driven by a shared set of values and belief in: education, cross-cultural learning, and the arts.

Southwest Spanish Craftsmen

Southwest Spanish Craftsmen is preserving classic motifs and woodworking techniques that stretch back to 1600, and at the same time, they're creating furniture for contemporary customers who value sophisticated design, craftsmanship and heirlooms. How they do their work, sets them apart from other furniture makers working today.

Southwest Spanish Craftsmen has a unique business story that is also a Northern New Mexican story. Southwest Spanish Craftsmen hired StoryPortrait Media help tell and show that story. The goal was to highlight the Carpinteros, many who are generational carpenters and who also have extended family who are woodworkers, at work. Southwest Spanish Craftsmen is not an assembly line production. Each made-to-order piece is cared for by one craftsman from start to finish. While many customers can walk through the wood shop to watch the progress of their purchase, others can not. The video allows clients and collectors the ability to see how a piece of furniture is made, and by who. Though the Southwestern furniture lines contain a high standard of uniformity, there is also a bit of personality in each, reflective of the particular craftsman who made it. Each piece is signed by the craftsman who made it.

The resulting video is used on the company website. It is also given as a gift with custom furniture purchases. The still image library has been used for editorial requests and print marketing.

Pinehurst Inn


historic lodging in Bayfield, Wisconsin


Pinehurst Inn is an 8-room, eco-friendly bed and breakfast located on the northernmost tip of Wisconsin on Lake Superior in Bayfield, Wisconsin. The area, known as “the gateway to the Apostle Islands,” speaks to those who love sailing and kayaking. Winter pursuits include skiing and dog sledding, and the year-round shopping is special too, with the Bayfield area a haven for artists. Yet more than anything, it is the place for relaxation. Steve and Nancy Sandstrom, the owners and innkeepers at Pinehurst Inn, knew they had a unique story to share with their guests and sustainability community. They hired Genevieve and StoryPortrait Media to bring that story to life on the screen through photographs and audio.

Our goal was to visually capture the beauty and spirit of the inn, the artfully prepared breakfasts and softness of the guest spaces, and the landscape that holds and enlivens the Bayfield community, and combine that with personal stories of a family-owned business devoted to the environment and the importance of rest and rejuvenation.

The results were two videos for the web and trade show presentations, and a library of images to use for the newly designed website, editorial requests, e-newsletters and other print advertising.

Los Reyes de Albuquerque

Los Reyes de Albuquerque y la Familia Martinez is a public radio and online documentary funded by the New Mexico Humanities Council and KUNM Independent Producers Fund, and directed by Paul Ingles with photography, video and web design by Genevieve Russell and StoryPortrait Media

In New Mexico, the name of Roberto Martinez is synonymous with royalty. Los Reyes de Albuquerque (The Kings of Albuquerque) is a Nuevo Mexicano styled Mariachi group Martinez founded with Ray Flores, Miguel Archibeque and other friends in 1962. For nearly a half century Los Reyes preformed all over the region and the nation in a wide variety of venues both humble and grand, from local schools and nursing homes, to community dances, concerts, feast days, State Fairs and festivals both regional and national, including several appearances at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Their music features Mariachi favorites in familiar arrangement of guitarra, requinto, vihuela, guitarron, violin and trompeta.

For this project, I was able to join Roberto and Los Reyes de Albuquerque at public and private events – a Mother's Day concert at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, community performances in a Farmington Senior Center, and a day care on Sandia Pueblo. I accompanied him, along with radio producer Paul Ingles, to his childhood home in Chacon and Mora, New Mexico and spent time with him and his wife Ramona, at home and his Church in Albuquerque, NM. This time spent and relationships grown, stories shared, history learned, is what I love about longer documentary projects and why they enrich my life. I was incredibly touched by Roberto's love of family, place and music. And, in his life, these all combined seamlessly.

The photographs have been published in the Smithsonian Folkways Magazine and New Mexico Magazine. The film was screened at the Outspace Performance Center at a special concert featuring Los Reyes, and at the Lensic Performance Art Space in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the start of the Nuestra Música, Celebración de los Viejitos, in 2010. Santa Fe Living Treasures

Peace activist and minister Mary Lou Cook, along with friends, founded the Santa Fe Living Treasures program in 1984. Inspired by Gandhi’s advice, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” the group wanted to do something that wasn’t being done—express appreciation for the important contributions of our Elders. An all-volunteer organization that honored elders who have generously served our community with kind hearts and good deeds. Their oral histories and photographs are at the Fray Angelico Chavez History Library, Santa Fe, NM.

Book III, “Living Treasures, Kind Hearts, Good Deeds” was published in 2021 and is currently sold out. The photographs here represent 10 years of photography, honoring up to six or seven individuals or couples a year from 2009 – 2019. It was an honor to be the Santa Fe Living Treasures photographer for ten years, and pleasure to serve on the SFLT committee. The committee hopes hope that the book will be a beacon of light in the midst of these troubling times. “Waldorf is a difficult curriculum and education to document, it’s really even difficult to put into words and Genevieve was able to capture that in her video and her photographs. It was remarkable because there’s a magic in Waldorf and the composition, the lighting and the subject. She captures the magic and the joy that the kids have in their every day learning. Genevieve allows the subjects to be themselves. The energy she brings is so chill that she captures a real moment instead of a staged moment. She has a way about her that allows people to feel really comfortable. We are still using pictures she took in 2010. They aren’t dated, they are universal and she delivered this expansive library to work with. Even after years since the project, the work continues to be used in flyers, videos, pamphlets, in every aspect of our marketing. We have gotten a lot of use over the years from her images.”

\"I started working with Genevieve the last 6-7 years of my business. The materials she produced were so good, I used them for years. They always felt fresh and there were so many different images that I could tell so many different stories with so they were endlessly versatile. I sold my business (Love + Leche) in 2020, and one of the assets that was included in the sale was the photo library, which the new owners continue to use today.

\nThe same is true with the photos I am working with now [in my new business]. When I am going to promote something, an image will organize how I am promoting something so without question Genevieve’s images are at the center of how I communicate my work visually through media. They upscale everything I do. The images are poetic, elegant, credibly polished but still so warm and inviting. They aren’t slick, but living breathing glowing images.
